»… we also of course need new concepts of ecological enterprizes. Firms can not be the same, they can not be purely profit making endevours in which those profits are distributed to a narrow section of the population. We need enterprizes that are not just motivated in ethical terms, but in which the legal forms reflect these new ideas about ecological and social goals, in which shareholder value is replaced by ideas of stakeholder value; in which individual ownership is replaced by ideas of community ownership; in which the structures that incentivize action within firms protect the long term, and mitigate that risk of continual, structural failure by having short term visions that are too narrow and too individualistic in their outlook.
It is blindingly clear that we do not have a macroeconomics of sustainability – we have a macroeconomics in which economic stability is dependent upon consumption growth into the future. … We urgently need … a different economics … The foundations for some of this already exist. We have for example increasingly a number of small scale, often community oriented ecological enterprize offering valuable services … they create cohesion at the community level.«
